History

Launched alongside the A340 in the late 1980s, the A330-300 made its first flight on 2 November 1992 and entered service with Air Inter in 1994. It became one of Airbus's best-selling widebodies, later refreshed as the re-engined A330neo.

Variants

The shorter A330-200 trades capacity for greater range, while the A330-200F is a dedicated freighter. The modern A330-900 (neo) uses new-generation engines and Sharklet wingtips for improved efficiency.

The A330-300 is a common sight at London Heathrow and Gatwick, flown by Virgin Atlantic and many visiting carriers, and has appeared in the fleets of UK charter and long-haul operators serving Manchester.

In depth

The A330-300's persistence in airline fleets long after its 1992 debut is a function of economics rather than sentiment. When twin-engine extended-range operations (ETOPS) rules relaxed through the 1990s and 2000s, operators discovered that a two-crew widebody burning two engines' worth of fuel could serve routes previously assigned to four-engine types. The -300 variant — the longer of the two original body lengths — seats roughly 250–300 passengers in a typical three-class arrangement, a size that suits secondary intercontinental markets and dense medium-haul sectors in Asia equally well. Airlines from Cathay Pacific to Turkish Airlines to Air Mauritius built entire long-haul strategies around it. That breadth of application is why you still see airframes delivered in the late 1990s turning passenger revenue in 2026.

The A330neo (new engine option) family, launched in 2014 and entering service from 2018, sits alongside rather than replacing the earlier build standard in active fleets. Airbus offered the neo conversion partly because a replacement would have required airlines to retrain pilots and overhaul spares pools — neither is cheap. The A330-900neo (the long-body neo variant, equivalent in length to the -300) uses Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and Sharklet wingtip extensions instead of the original upturned fences, improving fuel burn by around fourteen percent. Telling ceo from neo at a gate: the neo's Sharklets are taller and more blade-like than the ceo's stubby upturned fences, and the Trent 7000's large nacelles have a distinctive chevron serration at the nozzle. The neo also sits slightly higher on its landing gear.

The -200 versus -300 question comes up regularly because the two variants have overlapped in fleets at the same airline for decades. The -300 is the original body length at 63.7 m; the -200 is a shortened derivative at 58.8 m, traded the capacity for range, and entered service in 1998. At a gate, the easiest tell is door count: the -300 has four main-deck door pairs while the -200 has three. From a distance, the -300's fuselage appears proportionally longer relative to the wings.

The A330 MRTT (Multi-Role Tanker Transport) deserves its own paragraph because it represents a substantial second life for the airframe. Developed by Airbus Defence and Space and based on the A330-200, the MRTT has been ordered by more than a dozen air forces including those of Australia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the UAE, France, and the UK (where it serves as the Voyager KC2/KC3). The Voyager fleet, operated by AirTanker on behalf of the RAF, is based at Brize Norton and handles the bulk of British air-to-air refuelling tasking. The MRTT uses an underwing refuelling pod arrangement and a centreline hose-drum unit, and can convert between tanker and passenger transport roles. Spotting an MRTT versus a commercial A330 is straightforward if you know where to look: the underwing refuelling pods are visible beneath each wing, and military aircraft wear subdued national markings rather than airline liveries.

Commercially, the A330-300 is heaviest in Asia-Pacific, where high-density two-class configurations and medium-sector distances suit its economics. Chinese carriers — Air China, China Eastern, China Southern — operate large fleets. Korean Air and Japan Airlines have used them for regional international routes. In Europe, the type fills intercontinental slots at mid-tier carriers that cannot justify the higher capital cost of a 787 or A350. At UK airports, you are most likely to see the A330-300 at Heathrow in the liveries of visiting Asian and Middle Eastern carriers, and occasionally at Gatwick and Manchester on leisure-market routes.
