History
Grumman developed the Tomcat after the cancellation of the F-111B, and it first flew in 1970. Its swing wings and powerful AWG-9 radar allowed it to engage targets at extreme range with the AIM-54 Phoenix missile. It served as the US Navy's premier carrier fighter for three decades.
Variants
The original F-14A was followed by the re-engined F-14B and the digitally upgraded F-14D Super Tomcat. Late in its career the Tomcat gained a precision strike capability as the 'Bombcat'. Only Iran operated the type abroad.

The Tomcat never served in UK forces, but it became a cultural icon and a popular subject at British model and aviation shows. US Navy Tomcats occasionally visited UK bases during NATO exercises. Its retirement in 2006 was widely covered in the British aviation press.
In depth
The Tomcat's variable-sweep wing is the most visually dramatic feature on any aircraft to enter US Navy service, but the engineering rationale behind it runs deeper than the spectacle suggests. Grumman's designers adopted variable geometry because the F-14 had to perform two missions with radically different aerodynamic requirements: intercepting Soviet bombers at long range, which rewards a high-aspect-ratio straight wing for efficient sustained cruise, and close-range dogfighting, which rewards a swept wing with low drag at high speed. A conventional fixed wing forced a compromise that served neither mission well. The swing wings varied from roughly 20 degrees for low-speed approach and carrier landing to 68 degrees for high-speed dash, automatically scheduled by an air data computer that calculated the optimal sweep for the current flight condition. The structural weight penalty was significant, but the US Navy accepted it for the operational flexibility — and Grumman used titanium extensively in the pivot structure, one of the largest early applications of titanium in a production airframe.
The AWG-9 radar and AIM-54 Phoenix missile system represented an equally ambitious technical leap. The AWG-9 could track 24 targets simultaneously and fire at six of them with independent AIM-54s — a capability designed specifically for a Soviet anti-ship missile salvo involving dozens of simultaneously arriving threats. The Phoenix itself was enormous, over five metres long and nearly half a tonne, and a Tomcat could carry six of them on the wing gloves and fuselage rails. In practice, the Phoenix was fired in anger only by the Iranian Air Force, which used inherited American Tomcats against Iraqi aircraft during the 1980-88 war with real if contested success. The US Navy's own Phoenix shots in combat were two, against Iraqi aircraft over the Gulf in 1999, both of which missed — an awkward footnote for the most expensive air-to-air missile in history at the time.
The Tomcat's US Navy combat record includes its most famous engagement in 1981, when two Tomcats from USS Nimitz shot down two Libyan Su-22 Fitters over the Gulf of Sidra in an engagement so brief that both kills were complete before the Libyan flight lead had finished transmitting his own engagement call. In 1986, two more Tomcats flying escort during Operation El Dorado Canyon shot down two Libyan MiG-23s that turned to engage them. Late in its career, the Tomcat transitioned increasingly to the strike role — the Bombcat configuration carrying LANTIRN pods and GPS-guided bombs — and flew extensively over Iraq and Afghanistan in this capacity before the type was retired in 2006.
For spotters, the best examples in the United States are at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida, which holds multiple complete examples including an F-14D in the large hangar bay — free to enter and offering some of the closest public access to any F-14. The Grumman Memorial Park in Calverton, New York, preserves an F-14 near the facility where they were built. The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City has an F-14 on the flight deck, visible in all weathers. In Britain, no complete F-14 is on display, but the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton holds extensive Cold War carrier aviation collections that provide essential context.
The detail that most rewards extended study: where the fixed inboard wing section meets the movable outer panel, a pivot box assembly is visible whose structural complexity reflects the enormous bending moments at that junction. On close examination during static displays, the titanium pivot structure is recognisably different in surface finish from the aluminium surrounding it — slightly darker and with a different grain when the light catches it. The fixed glove section also carries the AIM-54 launch rails on its lower surface; when fully loaded with six Phoenix missiles, the aircraft's silhouette is markedly different from the clean configuration, with large distinctive shapes below the fixed wing centre section that are immediately identifiable even from a considerable distance.
