History

Boeing developed the Super Hornet in the 1990s to replace both the legacy Hornet and the retiring F-14 Tomcat, and it first flew in 1995. It is roughly twenty per cent larger than its predecessor with greater range, payload and modern avionics. It remains in production and frontline service.

Variants

The single-seat F/A-18E and two-seat F/A-18F form the core fleet, supported by the EA-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft. Australia is the only export operator, flying both the F and the Growler. Block III upgrades add advanced sensors and networking.

In depth

The Super Hornet is a product of enforced pragmatism. The US Navy's original path to post-Cold War strike capability ran through the McDonnell Douglas A-12 Avenger II, a stealthy flying-wing attack aircraft with enormous range and payload. The A-12 programme was cancelled in January 1991 by Defense Secretary Dick Cheney — it was six billion dollars over budget and three years behind schedule, with no prototype yet flying — leaving the Navy with no plan to replace the ageing A-6 Intruder and eventually the F-14 Tomcat. The Super Hornet was the answer by elimination: an expansion of the already-in-service F/A-18 Hornet that could cover both roles using an existing industrial base.

The commonality between the legacy Hornet and the Super Hornet is smaller than the shared name suggests. Roughly only ten to fifteen percent of parts interchange, and the airframe is a near-complete redesign. The fuselage is wider to accommodate more internal fuel; the intakes changed from the legacy Hornet's rounded 'D'-section to the angular caret shape that provides better pressure recovery at high angles of attack and speeds, while also reducing radar cross-section slightly. The wing gained a twenty-five percent increase in area and additional hardpoints. The result was an aircraft that was heavier, slower in maximum speed, but substantially longer-legged — combat radius increased from roughly 530 kilometres to over 720 kilometres.

The Super Hornet's combat debut came in November 2002 when the USS Abraham Lincoln's VFA-115 'Eagles' flew strikes into Afghanistan and Iraq. The first major test of the type's capability against a contested air environment came during Operation Iraqi Freedom in March 2003, when F/A-18Es and Fs flew both air-to-air escort missions and ground-attack sorties in the same aircraft, justified by the flexible employment doctrine that the 'F/A' prefix has always represented. A notable moment came when LT Nathan White, flying an F/A-18C (legacy Hornet), shot down an Iraqi MiG-23 with an AIM-7 Sparrow — the last confirmed US air-to-air kill over Iraq during the invasion.

The EA-18G Growler, the dedicated electronic attack variant, represents the most significant expansion of the airframe beyond its strike role. Developed to replace the EA-6B Prowler, the Growler carries ALQ-99 jamming pods on its wing stations while retaining AIM-120 AMRAAM self-defence missiles on the wingtip rails — uniquely among dedicated electronic attack aircraft, it can shoot back. The Growler has participated in every major US naval air campaign since its introduction in 2009, and Australia's RAAF squadron of EA-18Gs makes Australia the only country other than the US to field an active airborne electronic attack capability.

The Super Hornet's most direct rival in the carrier-based strike role is the Dassault Rafale M, which serves the French Navy. The Rafale M is single-engine versus the Super Hornet's twin, smaller by a significant margin, and uses a canard-delta configuration entirely unlike the Super Hornet's swept wing. From a recognition standpoint the two cannot be confused; the diagnostic check is that the Rafale M has a visible canard foreplane and a single engine exhaust, while the Super Hornet has twin exhausts and no canard. At longer range, the Super Hornet's large rectangular intakes forward of the wing root are a definitive distinguisher from almost every other naval strike aircraft in service.

For UK spotters, the Super Hornet appears when US carrier battle groups transit through or exercise in European waters. USS Gerald R. Ford and USS George H.W. Bush have both operated in the North Atlantic and Norwegian Sea with Super Hornet wings aboard; their aircraft occasionally appear at UK airfields during port visits or exercises. RIAT Fairford has hosted Super Hornet static and flying displays on multiple occasions, with VFA squadrons rotating through for the display. A lesser-known fact: the Super Hornet's wing fold mechanism folds the outer panels upward at a fold line approximately two-thirds out along the span. When folded on a carrier deck, the aircraft's wingtip trailing edges point skyward and the overall deck footprint is dramatically reduced — but the distinctive intake geometry remains visible from any angle, making deck identification straightforward even in a crowded hangar.
