The Ryan FR-1 Fireball was a unique carrier-based fighter that combined a piston engine in the nose with a General Electric J31 jet engine in the rear fuselage, designed to bridge US Navy fighter operations from propeller to jet power.

Superficially resembles a conventional carrier fighter of the period but is distinguished by the jet exhaust nozzle at the base of the vertical tail; the clean mid-wing monoplane layout with a Wright R-1820 cowl in the nose is otherwise conventional.

History

Ordered by the US Navy in 1943 as a transitional design, the Fireball allowed pilots to take off and land on piston power while using the jet for combat dash speed — a pragmatic approach given uncertainty about early jet engines' reliability. First flown in 1944, the Fireball entered fleet service in 1945 but saw no combat before the war ended. It achieved a footnote in history when a Fireball made the first jet-powered carrier landing — inadvertently, when its piston engine failed.

Variants

The XFR-1 prototype led to the FR-1 production variant; the FR-2, FR-3, and FR-4 proposals with more powerful engines were cancelled after V-J Day.

Where you'll see it

Served briefly with US Navy squadron VF-66 at the end of WWII; the squadron was decommissioned shortly after V-J Day and the Fireball was declared surplus, ending its fleet career after barely a year.
