The Ryan XFR-1 Fireball was the prototype of the FR-1 Fireball, a unique composite-powerplant carrier fighter combining a conventional piston radial in the nose with a jet engine exhausting through the tail for boosted performance.

History

The XFR-1 first flew in June 1944 at a time when jet engines alone lacked the reliability and range for carrier operations. Ryan's solution was to pair a Wright Cyclone piston engine with a General Electric J31 turbojet, allowing carrier approach on the piston engine alone if the jet failed. Production FR-1s entered service in late 1944 but arrived too late for World War II combat; the type was retired quickly as pure jets matured.

Variants

The XFR-1 prototype led to the FR-1 production variant; an XFR-2 with two jet engines and no piston was proposed but not built.

Where you'll see it

The FR-1 briefly equipped one US Navy squadron in 1945; retired by 1947 as pure-jet fighters became reliable enough for carrier use.
