Gloster Gladiator I

The Gloster Gladiator was the last biplane fighter to serve with the Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Arm, a highly refined design that combined the best features of the biplane era with modern enclosed cockpit and four-gun armament. Despite its obsolescence, it saw action in numerous theatres during WWII.

History

First flown in September 1934 and entering RAF service in 1937, the Gladiator I was already becoming obsolete when war began in 1939. Nevertheless, it fought in Norway, France, North Africa, Malta, East Africa, the Middle East, and Greece, where small numbers achieved remarkable results against superior opposition. The legendary defence of Malta by three aircraft nicknamed Faith, Hope, and Charity became the type's most celebrated episode.

Variants

The Gladiator I was the initial RAF variant; the Gladiator II introduced an improved engine and desert air filters; the Sea Gladiator was the naval carrier-based version with arrestor hook and emergency flotation equipment.
