Grumman American AA-1

The Grumman American AA-1 is a two-seat single-engine light aircraft notable for its bonded rather than riveted aluminium construction, a technique adapted from Grumman's experience with fibreglass and adhesive bonding. It was initially designed by Jim Bede as the BD-1.

History

Jim Bede conceived the AA-1 in the early 1960s as a low-cost riveted replacement; when Grumman's adhesive-bonding technology was applied, the design became structurally innovative. American Aviation Corporation produced it from 1968 before Grumman acquired the company in 1972, yielding the AA-1B and AA-1C Lynx and Tr2 trainer versions. Grumman American was later sold to Gulfstream American.

Variants

AA-1 Yankee, AA-1A, AA-1B Trainer, AA-1C Lynx — progressively refined with minor engine and equipment changes.

Where you'll see it

Used by private owners and flight schools primarily in North America; the design's light controls and sporty handling made it popular as a basic trainer despite demanding stall characteristics.
