Jabiru J230
Jabiru Aircraft · Australia · first flew 2003 · light aircraft
The Jabiru J230 is an Australian light sport aircraft built entirely from fibreglass and powered by Jabiru's own flat-six engine, giving it a top speed notably higher than most aircraft in its class. It represents the most capable model in the Jabiru sport line-up.
Recognition (WEFT)
| W — Wings | High-mounted, tapered |
|---|---|
| E — Engines | 1 × piston, nose-mounted |
| F — Fuselage | 6.55 m fuselage |
| T — Tail | Conventional |
WEFT is AircraftIQ's four-point recognition method — how it works.
Spot it by:
- All-fibreglass high-wing monoplane with slender single lift struts
- Side-by-side two-seat cockpit under a large single-piece canopy
- Jabiru flat-six engine under a tight-fitting cowling with chin air intake
The smooth fibreglass fuselage without visible panel lines, the low wing with slight taper, and the prominent flat-six cowling distinguish the J230 from tube-and-fabric ultralights of similar size.
Specifications
- The Jabiru J230 has a length of 6.55 m (21 ft).
- It has a wingspan of 9.55 m (31 ft).
- Its maximum speed is 222 km/h (138 mph).
- Typical crew: 2.

History
Jabiru Aircraft of Bundaberg, Queensland has produced a family of composite light aircraft since the 1980s. The J230 uses the larger Jabiru 3300 six-cylinder engine to distinguish it from the four-cylinder J120 and J160 siblings, and it achieved CASA certification for both the Australian and export markets.
Variants
The J230-D introduced a new wing design with improved laminar-flow characteristics; all variants share the same fuselage shell.
Where you'll see it
Popular with Australian private pilots and flying schools, and exported to North America and Europe; valued for its straightforward maintenance given that Jabiru manufactures both airframe and engine.
