The Junkers J 1, nicknamed 'Blechesel' (Tin Donkey) for its corrugated iron construction, was the world's first practical all-metal cantilever monoplane and a foundational aircraft in the history of aviation. First flown in December 1915, it demonstrated that metal monoplane construction was viable and laid the groundwork for all subsequent Junkers designs.

History
Professor Hugo Junkers flew the J 1 on 12 December 1915 at Döberitz, proving his long-held theory that a bracing-wire-free metal monoplane was feasible. The German military was unimpressed by its slow speed, but the structural concept was revolutionary. It directly led to the J 2, J 3, and eventually the wartime CL and J-class attack aircraft.
Variants
The J 1 was a one-off prototype; its principles were refined in the J 2 (first with duralumin instead of sheet iron) and the subsequent series of Junkers military and commercial aircraft.
