History
First flown in 1954, the Hercules was designed to lift troops and cargo into rough, short airstrips. Continuous development has kept it in production longer than almost any other aircraft, culminating in the modern C-130J Super Hercules.
Variants
Hundreds of sub-types: tankers (KC-130), gunships (AC-130), weather and special-mission birds, and the stretched C-130J-30. The RAF flew the type for decades, latterly the C-130J.

In depth
The Hercules was born from a 1951 US Air Force requirement for a turbine-powered assault transport capable of delivering troops and supplies to primitive strips without ground support equipment. Lockheed's Burbank team, led by Willis Hawkins, sketched the original configuration on a single sheet of paper: a shoulder-mounted, straight wing carrying four Allison T56 turboprops, a cavernous slab-sided fuselage with an integral rear ramp, and a high-set horizontal tail to keep the ramp clear of the ground. The pressurised, self-contained design meant the aircraft needed no ground power unit, no special servicing equipment, and could be turned around in a dirt clearing. That original geometry has never fundamentally changed.
The YC-130 prototype flew from Burbank on 23 August 1954 with a crew that included test pilot Stanley Beltz. Within the first few flights it was clear the aircraft was dramatically overbuilt for its role — the airframe proved so stiff and the systems so reliable that the structural life of early aircraft was repeatedly extended. The same basic wing design is still in production on the C-130J more than seven decades later, an achievement without parallel in the history of military aviation.
In combat the Hercules has punched far beyond its transport brief. During the Vietnam War, the AC-130A gunship variant was hastily developed by mounting side-firing weapons — initially miniguns and 40 mm Bofors cannon — into the cargo bay, creating an aircraft that could orbit a target for hours. The 'Spectre' gunship lineage grew through the AC-130H to the current AC-130W Stinger II and AC-130J Ghostrider, which carry 105 mm howitzers and precision-guided munitions. Operation Urgent Fury (Grenada, 1983) and every major US special-operations campaign since have relied on the gunship variant.
Perhaps the most audacious Hercules operation ever attempted was the Entebbe rescue in 1976, when Israeli C-130s flew a round trip of over 4,000 kilometres to Uganda to free hostages held at Entebbe airport. The aircraft landed in darkness using jeep headlights to mark the runway, and the entire assault element drove out of the cargo ramp in vehicles while the engines stayed running. The raid validated a generation of special-operations airlift doctrine.
British Hercules C1 aircraft (C-130K) flew throughout the Falklands conflict in 1982, staging through Ascension Island on air-drop and air-refuelling missions across the South Atlantic. A single aircraft could not reach the islands and return without refuelling from a Victor tanker, itself refuelled by another Victor — a relay chain of extraordinary complexity stretching 4,000 miles south. XV179 was struck by an Argentine Learjet-delivered bomb splinter during one mission but made it back.
The principal rival in terms of tactical lift is the CASA/EADS CN-235 and C-295 family at the lighter end, and the Airbus A400M Atlas at the heavier end. The A400M broadly replaced the RAF Hercules fleet; it is turboprop-powered like the C-130 but with eight-bladed composite propellers, a swept wing, and fly-by-wire flight controls. From a distance the two can be confused, but the A400M's thinner, swept wing and pointed nose are reliable differentiators. The C-130 holds a size advantage over the AN-12 Cub in terms of usable cabin volume per weight, though the Russian design matched it on payload.
For spotters, the C-130J Super Hercules operates today from RAF Brize Norton with 47 Squadron and from Prestwick on training sorties. USAF C-130Hs and Js pass through RAF Mildenhall and RAF Lakenheath regularly. A smattering of foreign-operated examples appear at RIAT Fairford; Nordic, Middle Eastern and African operators are the most frequent visitors. Airshow static lines at Fairford and Cosford reliably produce at least one example most years.
A piece of trivia that surprises most: the 'stretch' version of the Hercules, the C-130J-30, added a 4.57-metre (15-foot) fuselage plug that increased troop capacity from 92 to 128, yet the aircraft has almost identical external proportions from the front — the extra length is hard to judge without a reference object. Another: the aircraft's name 'Hercules' was not an official designation but a Lockheed marketing name that was quietly adopted by the USAF, departing from the normal naming convention of the day.
