The Bell XV-3 was the world's first successful tiltrotor aircraft, capable of taking off vertically like a helicopter and then tilting its rotors forward for fixed-wing flight. It proved the tiltrotor concept that would eventually lead to the V-22 Osprey.

History

First flown in 1955, the XV-3 completed the first full rotor-tilt conversion in 1958 after early difficulties. It underwent extensive testing with both the US Army and NASA through the early 1960s, accumulating vital data on tiltrotor dynamics. The programme was terminated in 1966 after a rotor-system failure during wind-tunnel testing.

Variants

Two XV-3 airframes were built; the second aircraft incorporated modifications based on lessons from the first. No production variants followed, but the XV-15 continued the lineage.

Where you'll see it

Operated solely as a research aircraft by the US Army, USAF, and NASA; never entered operational service. Its contribution to tiltrotor technology is immeasurable.
