The Shahed 129 is an Iranian medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned combat aerial vehicle capable of carrying guided munitions and conducting reconnaissance missions. It entered service with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Air Force around 2013.

History

Developed by Iran's Aviation Industries Organization, the Shahed 129 was unveiled in 2012 and represents Iran's most capable indigenous MALE UCAV. It has been deployed in Syria and exported to proxy forces, and has been used in combat operations across the Middle East. Iran claims an endurance exceeding 24 hours.

Variants

Improved variants with enhanced sensors and different weapon loads have been reported; the basic Shahed 129 is the primary production form.

In depth

The configuration is a textbook solution to a specific propulsion problem. A medium-altitude, long-endurance surveillance aircraft wants a fuel-efficient engine and hours of loiter, and a rear-mounted pusher propeller keeps that engine and its noisy, hot exhaust behind the sensor turret and out of the forward field of view. But once the propeller sits at the very tail, there is no fuselage left aft of it on which to hang the horizontal and vertical stabilisers. The twin-boom answer routes two slender booms rearward from the wing, past the propeller disc, to carry the tail surfaces in clean, undisturbed air well clear of the propwash. This keeps the tail effective and the pusher unobstructed at the same time — the reason so many endurance drones, from target types to strike UCAVs, converge on this same layout. The long, straight, high-aspect-ratio wing is the other half of the endurance formula: a slender wing produces lift with less induced drag, which at the moderate speeds and altitudes of a loiter mission translates directly into fuel saved and time on station gained. A piston pusher rather than a turbine follows the same reasoning that governs much of Iran's drone industry — a reciprocating engine burns far less fuel per hour than a small turboprop or turbofan, is cheaper and simpler to manufacture and maintain, and suits an aircraft whose value is measured in hours aloft rather than speed or ceiling, accepting a lower service ceiling as the price.

The visual resemblance to the General Atomics MQ-1 Predator is real but the design logic only partly overlaps. The Predator also uses a pusher piston engine and a slender wing for endurance, but it does without twin booms, carrying its tail on an inverted-V arrangement on a continuous tapering fuselage, and its most famous recognition feature is the bulbous chin and upper fairing housing satellite-communications and sensor equipment. That is the quickest discriminator: the Predator and the larger, turboprop-powered MQ-9 Reaper have a smooth, humped forward fuselage and a single tapering body, where the Shahed 129 shows two distinct booms bracketing a rear propeller, a flatter and more slab-sided fuselage pod, and a more model-aircraft-like nose. The Reaper is further set apart by its far greater size, its swept vertical tail above the fuselage, and the turboprop's characteristic pointed spinner. Against Iran's own smaller Mohajer series, the Shahed 129 is distinguished by its much longer wingspan, its cleaner high-aspect-ratio wing, and its dedicated underwing hardpoints — the Mohajer types are visibly shorter-winged reconnaissance machines rather than the larger armed platform.

Operationally the type has been documented most extensively over Syria, where open-source reporting placed it in both reconnaissance and strike roles supporting Iranian and allied forces. The publicly reported weapon fit centres on the Sadid family of precision-guided munitions — a small guided glide bomb or missile carried on the underwing pylons and used against ground targets — alongside heavier free-fall bombs in some reported configurations. The claimed day-plus endurance, if achieved, allows a single airframe to sustain surveillance of a fixed area across a full operational cycle, which is the entire point of the MALE class it aspires to.

Where a spotter meets it is telling in itself. Unlike the general-aviation and airline types elsewhere in this catalogue, the Shahed 129 has essentially no peaceful civil context and is never encountered casually at an airfield fence. It appears instead in commercial satellite imagery of military airfields, in propaganda and combat video circulated online, in wreckage photographed after losses, and in air-defence intercept reporting. Recognition for this type is therefore a matter of reading imagery and footage — locking onto the twin-boom tail, the rear pusher, the long slender wing, and the underwing stores — rather than watching one fly a circuit.
