History
The Siemens-Schuckert Riesenflugzeuge were a series of experimental and operational giant aircraft developed between 1914 and 1918. The R.III was an early member of the series, refining engine arrangement concepts that would carry through to later marks. Relatively few were completed, and operational use was limited by developmental challenges.
Variants
The R-series ran from R.I through R.VIII with progressive refinements in engine count, wingspan, and power transmission; the R.III sat in the middle of the developmental sequence.
Where you'll see it
The Siemens-Schuckert R types saw limited operational bombing use on the Eastern and Western Fronts; the mechanical complexity of their engine transmission systems made reliability difficult to achieve.
