The MH-60R Romeo is the US Navy anti-submarine and anti-surface multi-mission version of the Seahawk.
Recognition (WEFT)
| W — Wings | High-mounted, rotary |
|---|---|
| E — Engines | 2 × turboshaft, fuselage-mounted |
| F — Fuselage | 19.71 m fuselage |
| T — Tail | Conventional |
WEFT is AircraftIQ's four-point recognition method — how it works.
Spot it by:
- Folding main rotor blades and hinged tail for shipboard stowage
- Forward-mounted twin tail gear and a single starboard sliding cabin door, as on the SH-60B it derives from
- Radar, dipping sonar and FLIR sensor fit for submarine and surface hunting
It resembles other Seahawks, but the R has the SH-60B forward tail wheel layout and a glass cockpit. Look for the sensor and sonar equipment.
Specifications
- The Sikorsky MH-60R Seahawk has a length of 19.71 m (65 ft).
- It has a wingspan of 16.36 m (54 ft).
- Its maximum speed is 270 km/h (168 mph).
- Typical crew: 3-4.

History
Development began in 1993 as the LAMPS Mark III Block II upgrade. The first converted SH-60B, designated YSH-60R, made its maiden flight on 22 December 1999. The Navy deployed the MH-60R in 2006.
Variants
It combines features of the SH-60B and SH-60F, with four multi-function displays, AQS-22 dipping sonar, an ALQ-210 ESM system and Mk 54 torpedoes and Hellfire missiles. Specifications are the Seahawk family figures and apply to this version.
Where you'll see it
Squadrons receiving it become Helicopter Maritime Strike (HSM) squadrons. It replaced the SH-60B and SH-60F in US Navy service.
