The Airbus RACER (Rapid And Cost-Effective Rotorcraft) is a compound helicopter technology demonstrator designed to demonstrate up to 50 percent higher cruise speed than conventional helicopters while reducing fuel consumption by around 25 percent.

History

Developed under the EU Clean Sky 2 programme, the RACER made its first flight in April 2024 after years of design refinement. It achieved around 240 knots in early test flights, validating the compound configuration that combines a main rotor with twin lateral box-wing propulsors. The programme represents Airbus Helicopters' roadmap toward next-generation high-speed rotorcraft.

Variants

The RACER is a single demonstrator; the configuration could inform a future production aircraft in the 2030s timeframe, potentially for emergency services or offshore transport missions.
