Recognition (WEFT)
| W — Wings | High-mounted, rotary |
|---|---|
| E — Engines | 2 × turboshaft, fuselage-mounted |
| F — Fuselage | 17.12 m fuselage |
| T — Tail | Conventional |
WEFT is AircraftIQ's four-point recognition method — how it works.
Spot it by:
- Single main rotor with a conventional tail rotor
- Two General Electric CT7-8A turboshaft engines above the cabin
- Medium-lift S-92 airframe with an executive interior, flown as Marine One
It looks like an S-92: a single main rotor, two turboshaft engines and a conventional tail. Dimensions are those of the S-92 airframe, 17.12 m long with a 17.17 m main rotor.

History
Sikorsky entered the VH-92 in the VXX competition in the early 2000s but lost to the Lockheed Martin VH-71 Kestrel. When the competition restarted in 2010 Sikorsky resubmitted it, and it won in May 2014. The first VH-92A made its maiden flight on 28 July 2017.
Variants
Only the VH-92A was built, 23 in all: 21 operational aircraft and two test and training aircraft. It has an executive interior, military mission support systems, triple electrical power and redundant flight controls.
Where you'll see it
The type reached initial operational capability in December 2021 and was named Patriot in 2022. Sikorsky delivered the final batch of the 23 aircraft to Marine Helicopter Squadron One in August 2024, and a VH-92 first flew as Marine One on 19 August 2024.
