History

First flown on 29 January 2016, the MAX introduced fuel-efficient CFM LEAP-1B engines and aerodynamic refinements. The fleet was grounded worldwide in 2019 following two fatal accidents linked to its MCAS flight-control system, returning to service after extensive modifications and recertification.

Variants

The family spans the MAX 7, 8, 9 and 10, plus the high-density MAX 200. The MAX 8 is the core best-seller, with the others offering shorter or longer fuselages.

In depth

The MAX 8 cannot be understood without the MCAS story. When Boeing hung the larger, heavier LEAP engines further forward and higher on the wing to give them ground clearance, the change altered the aircraft's pitch behaviour, giving it a tendency to pitch up in certain conditions. The Manoeuvring Characteristics Augmentation System was designed to counter that by automatically trimming the nose down, preserving handling that felt like the older 737 and easing certification. The flaw was in its implementation: the system took its input from a single angle-of-attack sensor with no redundancy, so a single faulty sensor could command repeated nose-down trim against the crew's wishes. Two accidents followed, Lion Air in 2018 and Ethiopian Airlines in 2019, and the aircraft was grounded worldwide for some twenty months. Recertification brought fundamental changes: MCAS now cross-checks dual angle-of-attack sensors, the crew retain clear override authority, and revised training ensures pilots understand and can counter the system.

At the fence, a MAX 8 can be separated from a 737-800 even before the split-tip winglets are visible. The LEAP-1B nacelle is the clearest tell, with its markedly flatter bottom and a more pronounced forward sweep to the cowling, and it lacks the exposed translating-sleeve thrust reverser look of the older CFM56 installation. The nose gear is another clue: the MAX rides taller on the nose to give the repositioned engines their clearance, so the aircraft sits with a subtly different stance. On some MAX 200 airframes a crew rest or module hump is also present, adding a further point of difference for the close observer.

Ryanair's MAX 200 is a special sub-variant worth knowing. It packs 197 seats into a MAX 8 fuselage by adding a third pair of overwing exits, so at the wing a spotter can count a sixth exit door where a standard MAX 8 has fewer. The high seat count is central to Ryanair's economics, and the extra exit pair is the visible signature of the densified cabin, distinguishing the carrier's aircraft from the standard-density MAX 8s flown by others.

The fleet's recovery has been substantial. More than 500 MAX aircraft have been delivered globally since the return to service, and the enormous order backlog that accumulated during the grounding kept production alive and is now feeding a steady stream of new airframes into service. For British spotters this means the type is once again a regular sight, with Ryanair and TUI operating it on leisure and low-cost networks, and the numbers are climbing season by season.

One further detail helps place the aircraft in its wider family. The LEAP-1B is a MAX-exclusive engine: CFM built the LEAP in distinct variants that are not cross-compatible, with the LEAP-1A powering the A320neo, the LEAP-1B reserved for the 737 MAX, and the LEAP-1C fitted to the Comac C919. So while a neo and a MAX may both carry a LEAP, the engines are different machines tailored to each airframe, and the LEAP-1B's flat-bottomed nacelle belongs to the MAX alone, a fact that ties the engine's appearance neatly to the aircraft's identity at the fence.
