The smoothly curving, very flexible wingtips that sweep upward without any bolted-on winglet are the signature feature. Add the saw-tooth chevron trailing edges on the engine nacelles and the sleek, almost shark-like nose with its single curved windscreen, and it is hard to confuse with anything but the larger A350.

History

The 787 programme launched in 2004 around an airframe built largely from carbon-fibre composites, allowing higher cabin pressure and humidity for passenger comfort. After a much-delayed debut of the -8, the stretched 787-9 first flew in 2013 and became the family's most-ordered model. Its efficient engines opened new thin long-haul routes.

Variants

The Dreamliner comes in three sizes: the baseline 787-8, the popular stretched 787-9, and the larger 787-10. All share the same composite wing and choice of Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 or GE GEnx engines.

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic both fly 787-9s out of Heathrow on long-haul routes, and you'll catch foreign Dreamliners there and at Manchester. The type is a frequent sight on services to North America, Asia and Africa.

In depth

The 787's carbon-fibre wing is best appreciated from behind the fence. On the ground the unloaded wing droops noticeably, the tips hanging low, but in flight the same wing flexes upward at the tips by approximately two metres at cruise, curving into a graceful arc that a metal wing could never sustain without fatigue. That flexibility is a direct consequence of the composite construction, and comparing a parked Dreamliner's drooping tips with the same aircraft's soaring wing on a flypast is one of the more instructive things a spotter can observe.

The composite airframe also changed the cabin environment in ways worth understanding, because a spotter is often asked why the aircraft is pleasant to fly in. Freed from the fatigue limits of aluminium, Boeing pressurised the cabin to an equivalent altitude of around 1,829 metres, lower than the roughly 2,438 metres typical of metal airliners, and raised the humidity, so passengers arrive less dehydrated and less fatigued. It is background rather than a spotting cue, but it is part of why the type earned its reputation.

The programme's early history was turbulent. Production ran late, the -8 was delayed well beyond its original schedule, and in 2013 the entire worldwide fleet was grounded after two lithium-ion battery incidents. The root cause was a thermal runaway in the auxiliary power unit battery, and Boeing's fix enclosed the battery in a robust containment and venting system that would confine any future failure safely. The grounding disrupted early deliveries and dented confidence, but the aircraft recovered and went on to become a mainstay of long-haul fleets.

Engine choice is a genuine spotting variable. The Dreamliner is offered with either the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 or the General Electric GEnx, and the two present different inlet and nacelle profiles that, combined with airline paint schemes, help confirm an identification. The Trent 1000 also carried a well-documented durability chapter, with the TEN variant and related issues affecting the availability of some operators' fleets for a period, a background fact useful when a spotter notices particular carriers leaning on one engine type.

The aircraft's real legacy is in the route map. The Dreamliner's range and efficiency made thin point-to-point long-haul sectors viable, opening city pairs such as Heathrow to Calgary and Edinburgh to New York that could not fill a larger widebody. For spotters this widened the field considerably, bringing long-haul metal to secondary airports and putting new destinations on departure boards that had never carried them before. Telling the -9 from its stablemates rewards attention to length and nose. The -8 is shorter with a slightly blunter nose section, the -9 is longer with a more pointed nose, and the -10 is longer still; on the -10 the characteristic wingtip flex is far less apparent in normal operation, so a stretched Dreamliner sitting flat is a useful clue. In Britain the centre of the Dreamliner universe is Heathrow Terminal 5, where British Airways and Virgin Atlantic aircraft come and go throughout the day, giving a spotter the chance to compare engine types, sub-variants and that remarkable flexing wing in a single session.
