The unmistakable cue is the black 'mask' or 'mascara' panel surrounding the cockpit windows, a styling feature unique to the A350. Combine that with the curved scimitar wingtips that blend smoothly upward and the single curved windscreen to separate it from the visually similar 787, which has chevron engine nacelles and a more pointed nose.

History

Airbus reworked its A350 design into the clean-sheet A350 XWB ('Extra Wide Body') with a carbon-composite fuselage and wing, and the A350-900 first flew in 2013. Powered exclusively by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, it entered service in 2015 and rapidly became a long-haul mainstay. It targets routes once flown by older twins and four-engined jets.

Variants

The family comprises the standard A350-900, the stretched A350-1000, the ultra-long-range A350-900ULR, and a forthcoming A350F freighter. All share the same wing and Trent XWB engine family.

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic operate A350-900s from Heathrow, joined by Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific and many others on intercontinental routes. It is now a common widebody sight at Heathrow throughout the day.

In depth

Unlike the Dreamliner with its two competing engine suppliers, the A350 is powered exclusively by the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB, a single-source decision by Airbus that gives the whole family a uniform sound and appearance. The engine's inlet has a characteristic shape, and the S-duct routing visible in the contours of the cowling is part of what distinguishes the nacelle to a practised eye. Because there is no engine variable to consider, identifying an A350 comes down entirely to airframe features, which makes the aircraft an unusually clean study.

The most famous of those features is the dark panel wrapped around the cockpit, often called the mascara. It is worth understanding what it actually is: a titanium and carbon-composite structure forming the entire forward fuselage nose section, dark not because of paint but because of the exposed carbon fibre itself. The panel curves back around the flight-deck windows in a continuous sweep, and its depth of colour is a genuine material property rather than a livery choice, which is why it looks the same across every operator regardless of the rest of the paint scheme.

That carbon construction extends across the airframe, which is roughly fifty-three per cent composite by weight. In direct sunlight the fuselage takes on a slightly darker, richer sheen than an aluminium aircraft, a subtle but real difference that becomes obvious once a spotter has an A350 and a metal widebody on the same apron to compare. The composite surfaces are also notably smooth, without the ripples and fastener lines that catch the light on riveted metal skin.

The A350-900 sits close enough in size to the Boeing 777-300ER to cause genuine confusion at the fence, with broadly similar seat counts and roughly comparable wingspans, so the reliable discriminators are the mascara panel, the curved scimitar wingtips and the composite sheen rather than sheer scale. Within its own family the -900 is separated from the larger -1000 mainly by length: the -1000 stretches to about 73.8 metres against the -900's 66.8 metres, and it rides on a new six-wheel main bogie where the -900 uses a four-wheel truck, so a glance at the main gear settles the question when the length is hard to judge from an awkward angle.

Qatar Airways holds a central place in the type's history as launch customer and operator of one of the largest A350 fleets, and its aircraft are a common sight at the major European hubs. In Britain the finest vantage point is Heathrow's early-morning arrivals onto runway 09L, where the long-haul inbound stream delivers British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Qatar and Cathay Pacific A350s often following one another in rapid succession. Standing under that approach as a run of composite widebodies sweeps in, each with its dark nose panel and upswept scimitar tips catching the low sun, is the clearest way to fix the aircraft's distinctive character in the memory, and to train the eye on the fine points that separate it from the 777 it so often flies alongside.
