History
Airbus launched the neo ('new engine option') in 2010, flying it in 2014 with PW1100G geared-fan or CFM LEAP engines that cut fuel burn around 15 per cent. It out-sold every rival and pushed the A320 family past the 737 as history's best-selling airliner.
Variants
The A320neo sits between the smaller A319neo and stretched A321neo/XLR; the ceo ('current engine option') designation retro-named the originals.

Ubiquitous in UK skies with easyJet, British Airways, Wizz and virtually every European carrier — the default short-haul sight and sound (the PW geared fan's distinctive quiet whine is a giveaway).
In depth
The neo's most memorable feature for spotters is often something heard rather than seen. The Pratt & Whitney PW1100G geared turbofan produces a soft, undulating hum at low power settings, most audible during pushback and taxi, that many spotters describe as a washing machine on a spin cycle. The gearbox that lets the large fan turn slowly while the turbine spins fast is responsible for the effect. The rival CFM LEAP, by contrast, makes a more conventional turbofan sound, closer to what the ear expects from an airliner, so a neo can sometimes be identified by engine type before it is even in clear view.
On the ground the two powerplants can be told apart with a little practice. The PW1100G tends to present a slightly larger fan diameter and a subtly different inlet lip profile, while the LEAP nacelle has its own distinct cowling shape. The differences are fine, and lighting and angle matter, but on a well-lit apron a patient observer can learn to call the engine correctly. This matters because airlines chose engines partly for fleet commonality, and knowing an operator's selection narrows the field: IndiGo and AirAsia built around the Pratt geared turbofan, while easyJet and Wizz Air went with the LEAP or ran mixed fleets, so the engine and the livery together often clinch an identification.
Above the fence sits the sharklet, the large upswept wingtip standing roughly 2.4 metres tall, which is the neo's signature planform feature. Airbus chose a single tall blade rather than the split-tip winglets Boeing adopted on its competitor, a cleaner aerodynamic solution that also visually distinguishes the two families at a glance. The sharklet's height and rake give the neo a taller, more purposeful stance than the older classic-engine aircraft with their modest wingtip fences.
The scale of the type's success is difficult to overstate. The A320neo family carries a backlog of more than 9,000 unfilled orders, the largest order backlog in aviation history, which guarantees that the aircraft will be rolling off the line and appearing at airports for many years to come. That backlog also explains a transition a spotter can watch unfold in real time. On routes where the older CFM56-powered 737 next-generation aircraft once dominated, the neo has been steadily displacing them, and a regular observer at a hub such as Gatwick can trace the changeover season by season as neo tails multiply and the older narrowbodies thin out.
That displacement is one of the quieter stories in modern spotting. It is not a dramatic new shape arriving but a gradual substitution: the same routes, the same carriers, but progressively quieter and more fuel-efficient aircraft on the stand. For anyone keeping a movements log over several years, the shifting balance between the classic-engine narrowbodies and their re-engined successors is a genuine record of an industry-wide fleet renewal, visible from the perimeter fence without any inside knowledge. The neo's combination of a distinctive sound, a tall sharklet and a rounder nose than its Boeing rival makes it one of the most satisfying modern types to learn, and its sheer numbers mean the practice never runs short of subjects.
