History

Building on experience with the YS-11M, NAMC developed the M-A to address operational feedback from the JASDF, improving the cargo handling provisions and updating avionics during the late 1960s.

Variants

The M-A sits alongside the M as the two principal JASDF cargo variants; both were eventually superseded by the Kawasaki C-1 and later the C-2.

Where you'll see it

Served the Japan Air Self-Defense Force as a standard tactical transport into the 1990s and beyond.
